VUME - Respecting our warriors - A Memorial to the 8th Air Force
This WWII Battle Monument and Cemetery honors over 3812 dead and lists
5127 names on the wall of the missing. It is primarily comprised of airmen
and those who supported the war effort. The land was donated by
Cambridge University as a means to honor those who gave their lives and
for those who fought to resist the axis of evil during WWII. A walk about the
grounds quickly shows that this is a professionally, respectfully and
honorably maintained place of reflection. Each marble stone is cared for
with love and dedication to keep the memories alive and preserved for the
future. The chapel is graced with an enormous wall map of the theater of
operations and is capped by a tiled mosaic ceiling that Michelangelo would
certainly approve of.
Each year, the UK's only flying B-17, the Sally-B, pays homage with a flypast
the grounds.

The ceiling in the chapel is
simply breathtaking. Seeing is
believing.
