Nothing Too Heavy and Nothing Too High
It’s “Game On” and Nothing Less
Local Ironworker's have taken to the task of finishing off the beast.  No longer a
dominant icon of the skyline. One of the few final sunrises illuminate the girder.

The dismantling  project is complete, 12 months since February of 2008.
The week of 2/22/09 the main final section was moved onto the barge.

The dismantling project is in high gear. Long blazing hot summer days are the
norm in this industry. Meet some of the players who make things happen. Three
companies have join together to bring this crane to the earth, one ton at a time.
The new cancer facility of the South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth has the
mark of Goliath within. In several prominent areas of the girders are signs of
remembrance for Bobby Harvey, he was killed at the Goliath Crane on August 14.

Then and Now - History and stories
Assembled in 1975, the Goliath crane has served many and provided a means of
income for an industry. This section will begin to build once the crane heads under
the Fore River Bridge.
The work is far from over, the Barge is in Boston for it's periodic recertification. Soon
Goliath will be just 7 feet off the ground and read to take a 1/2 mile crawl on 72
axles. Even with no legs and at 1900 ton, it's still "Game On". The SarTowers are in
the process of dismantling.

preparations ongoing for the big move
12/1/08
Tedious work of inching the final few feet is ongoing. The Sartower jacks are still
muscling the girder up with 8 - 600 ton pistons while the team prepares the ground
for moving. Meanwhile, the barge "Brooklyn Bridge" awaits the cargo in wet basin
#13. Snow time may delay show time.

wheels - loaded onto 72 axles

Inch by inch the main girder is crawling it's way toward the barge. Next step is to
traverse the Fore River Railroad and into the car lot, closing in on the barge. Each
and every move is calculated and watched by the dismantling staff, site supervisors
and of course the authorities. Bystanders are in for a show once the girder turns
broadside to the street offering a rare look to many who have only seen it from a
distance.

The final days are approaching. As this final phase is underway, memories of a
once thriving industry are about to literally fade away into the sunset. Bittersweet for
many, a sign of the times of a long past industrial revolution that has since shifted
resources and technology from our shores. The teams that have been brought
together here have shared a unique project, tough on the soul yet rewarding to have
it come to a close. The slain beast will traverse the harsh winters ocean.

have chosen this profession.

The work level is full steam, the most work in the final stages of the dismantling of
the once prominent landmark. The barge with crane on board will leave within the
next week, sealing the fate, the final chapter of shipbuilding in Quincy, MA. A team of
welders will secure the crane to the barge in preparation for the heavy seas ahead.

171,000 lbs of steel- The 160' SW Leg Pick
08/08/08
On August 8th, 2008, the southwest leg of Goliath was cut. Using a precision track
cutting tool, The Go-Fer III, Ironworker's from Local 7, Boston, severed the leg.
Operating Engineers from Local 4, Boston lowered the leg to the ground.
Early recon photos during the summer of 2007
Our first real up close and personal visit was in May 2007. Years prior we were just
peeping over the fence. Take a good look at the desolate landscape that begged to
be explored, it would have been a shame to miss this opportunity to document the
demise of such a prominent landmark.
The major components are now loaded onto the barge. The most teams have been
involved since the onset of the project. Ironworker's, Operating Engineers, Pile
Drivers and Special Projects Lift teams are all synchronized to make this a
successful event.
